Preparing Pasta at Home: a Pasta Pantry Primer

Call us crazy, but we think pasta and sauce can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Whether it’s lunch, dinner or a late night snack, this combination is responsible for satisfying the cravings of many hungry residents in Sherwood Park and Edmonton that come through our doors. But what if you want to get your pasta fix in the comfort of your own home? Never fear, this guide will show you how you can get that same great Pasta Pantry experience using the same items as your favourite Trattoria.

First things first: the measurements and the ingredients. Because there’s no such thing as portion control when it comes to pasta (it’s guaranteed that as soon as you start making some, you’ll realize it’s not enough, your best best is to make more than you think you need. Making a big batch means you’ll have enough pasta for the whole family; it also means you’ll have multiple healthy meals throughout the week that you can grab at a moment’s notice.

While you could use store bought pasta and sauce, there’s a much more nutritious option that’ll give you more flavours: our Pasta Pantry pasta and sauce! Each one of our pastas and sauces are homemade: the former is made fresh each and every day from Canadian grown milled durum semolina, while the latter is made using only the best ingredients possible.  We have different varieties of pasta cuts each day, so if you’re interested in a particular type, feel free to give us a call at 780-467-3777 to find out what the pastas of the day are or to make a request.

Once you get that taken care of, you’ll want to boil a big pot of water. Make sure to include a generous amount of salt and oil; these ingredients make a significant difference on the finished product. Salt water gives pasta that distinctive flavour, while a bit of oil helps prevent the pasta from clumping together. When the water it ready, toss your pasta in and let them cook. Depending on how much water and pasta you’re using, cooking times will vary. Your goal should be to get the pasta cooked enough so that it’s slightly firm and gives off a bit of resistance (this is also known as “al dente.”) Once it’s ready, drain the water, apply your favourite sauce, give it a good mix, and enjoy!
