1. Meatballs—Not Limited to Just Italy!

The Italian word for meatball is polpette. Although many countries around the world have their own take, like the Vietnamese and banh mi or the  Middle East and kofta,) on these small but flavourful delights, Italian meatballs are in a league of their own. They’re often made using Italian staples like parsley and our favourite ingredient, garlic! In most regions in Italy, polpette are usually fried and enjoyed as a snack.

Have you ever had a Swedish meatball at IKEA? The furniture company began selling food more than 30 years ago when founder Ingvar Kamprad became afraid that shoppers were feeling hungry during their long trips to IKEA. The result? In 2011, the Wall Street Journal reported that IKEA’s Food division earns $2 billion in annual revenue. That same year, the company sold a staggering 150 million meatballs!

3. The Largest Meatball of all Time!

According to The Guinness Book of World Records, the largest meatball ever weighs in at a whopping 1,100 pounds, almost 5 times heavier than the previous record holder! The meatball was made by the Columbus Italian Club in Columbus, Ohio back in 2011 and took three days to cook! To make the meatball, the club used a rounded vessel housed in a handcrafted oven made of stainless steal, faux bricks, stucco, and a viewing window.
