4 Mighty Meatball Facts!

Ahh the meatball, one of the most delectable entrees at Pasta Pantry. Made daily using on the best Alberta grass fed beef and pork available, we’re glad that many of our friends in the Edmonton and Sherwood Park area enjoy them as much as we do. In order to teach you more about these meaty, gluten free foods, we’re sharing 4 of our favourite meatball facts with you today!

1. Meatballs—Not Limited to Just Italy!

The Italian word for meatball is polpette. Although many countries around the world have their own take, like the Vietnamese and banh mi or the  Middle East and kofta,) on these small but flavourful delights, Italian meatballs are in a league of their own. They’re often made using Italian staples like parsley and our favourite ingredient, garlic! In most regions in Italy, polpette are usually fried and enjoyed as a snack.

2. IKEA: A Furniture & Meatball Empire

Have you ever had a Swedish meatball at IKEA? The furniture company began selling food more than 30 years ago when founder Ingvar Kamprad became afraid that shoppers were feeling hungry during their long trips to IKEA. The result? In 2011, the Wall Street Journal reported that IKEA’s Food division earns $2 billion in annual revenue. That same year, the company sold a staggering 150 million meatballs!

3. The Largest Meatball of all Time!

According to The Guinness Book of World Records, the largest meatball ever weighs in at a whopping 1,100 pounds, almost 5 times heavier than the previous record holder! The meatball was made by the Columbus Italian Club in Columbus, Ohio back in 2011 and took three days to cook! To make the meatball, the club used a rounded vessel housed in a handcrafted oven made of stainless steal, faux bricks, stucco, and a viewing window.

Red, White, or Beer?

Italian food is delicious on its own, but it’s even better when accompanied by a great wine. Most pasta dishes contain tomato sauce which is quite acidic.  Pairing a robust red wine with dishes such as spaghetti or meatballs complements the taste of the food as the acidity of the wine matches the acidity of the dish.  If you are in the mood for a salad or a dish comprised of fresh tomatoes or mozzarella, consider white wine as your choice of beverage. The citrus notes of white wine enhance the flavour of fresh food.

If wine isn’t a choice you want to consider, why not try one of our many varieties of beer?  One of our favourite Italian beers, Peroni Nastro Azzurro is a popular choice.  Made in the tradition of Italian craftsmanship, this pale lager is made from 100% natural ingredients including the finest of European hops.  The Peroni brewery named the brand Nastro Azzurro after the Italian ocean liner SS Rex.  The name means “blue ribbon” in Italian which refers to the award the SS Rex achieved in 1933 when it won a race across the western Atlantic Ocean.  The beer has also proven to be a winner as it is imported to countries all over the world.

Our menu choices are varied and whether you prefer wine or beer, we have many options to offer.  Our wine selection varies so give us a call at 780-467-3777 if you are interested in our most current selections. You can buy by the glass, half litre or bottle and we are always happy to assist you in pairing your meal with the perfect beverage. Grab a Bowl of Tomato Soup!

There’s a good reason why tomato soup is loved by kids and adults. While canned soups have come under fire for being high in sodium, our tomato soup is made from fresh tomatoes, herbs, spices, and a blend of our finest cheeses (we even garnish it with a bit of garlic croutons!) Tomatoes are packed with lycopene, a powerful nutrient that protects from free radical damage and chronic diseases. They also contain selenium and copper, two minerals that are vital for strengthening your bones and your nervous system.

Try Our Tomato Vegetable Sauce Today!

Who else is excited for spring? Although we can’t wait for the warmer weather, the change of the season also comes with an unattended consequence: getting sick! The last thing we would ever want you to feel is have a sore throat or a stuffy nose. That’s why we’re excited to tell you all about how you can stay healthy when eating at Pasta Pantry. If you haven’t tried our Tomato Vegetable sauce, we encourage you to add it to your next pasta dish!

When it comes to our Vegetable Tomato sauce, we don’t hold back. We use only the best vegetables possible, including celery, carrots, onions, garlic, red and green bell peppers, zucchini, and of course, tomatoes. But why do we use all of these ingredients? Besides being tasty, these vegetables provide a wide spectrum of health benefits.

  • Celery is high in Vitamin K, which promotes healthy bones and reduces the risk of heart disease. It is also a fantastic source of folate, potassium, and Vitamin C.
  • Carrots are good for more than just your eyes. They also are linked to a strong and healthy immune system thanks to the amount of Vitamin A packed within them. But don’t snack on too many carrots–because they contain carotene, a pigment that’s also found in pumpkins and sweet potatoes, having too much of it in your diet will cause your skin to turn orange!
  • Besides being essential for Italian cooking, onions are a nutritional powerhouse. Packed with biotin, a vitamin linked to healthy skin, nails, and hair, onions also contain manganese, vitamin B6, and copper; these three essential minerals and vitamins help with controlling blood sugar, producing energy for the body, and reducing cholesterol, respectively.
  • Don’t worry, there’s no way we would leave garlic off of this list! This plant in the onion family has long been the go-to cure for any sickness thanks to its anti-microbial properties. Researchers have also linked garlic to decreased levels of Alzheimer’s and dementia thanks to its antioxidants. To learn more about garlic, check out this post!
  • Red and green bell peppers not only add some colour to your plate, but they also come bearing Vitamin C and fibre, the latter of which is crucial for digestion.
  • Zucchini lovers rejoice! This vegetable is full of magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus and has been linked to protection against many infections and diseases.
  • And while they’re not featured in the picture ( photographing all of these vegetables is no easy task), we also add a ton of tomatoes to our sauce! Tomatoes are not only the cornerstone of every good sauce, but they’re also beneficial for heart, eye and kidney health.
